The Woes of an English Football Fan

England are, at the moment, utterly pathetic. We aren’t even in the Euro 2008 tournament when we are supposed to be ranked 11th in the world, we keep getting rid of coaches, our players are fantastic in their own club teams (is anyone going to tell me that John Terry is not a bloody awesome player?) but when we put them all in one place they faff about like fools and make us suffer. Why on earth Blue Square online football betting has England at 9/1 to win the World Cup I have no idea. We are simply not that good yet.

Personally, I think it may have been somewhat of an error to get rid of Sven; he did, after all, get us to the latter stages of pretty much every competition he entered us in. However, with Steve McClaren was appointed as the head coach following the 2006 World Cup whatever reign we may have had was marked with a complete lack of success.

When we failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championships it was the last straw and McClaren left on 22 November 2007, after only 16 months in charge and making him the shortest tenured full time England manager ever since the inauguration of the post in 1946. He was replaced by the former Real Madrid and AC Milan manager Fabio Capello, the second foreign manager to coach England in less than 10 years.

Hopefully, dear old Fabio will sort us out but he has a hell of a task ahead of him. Fortunately he has a reputation for his hard-headed practicality. He had the humility to bring back David Beckham into the Real Madrid first team, after he had previously dropped him - which arguably helped towards Real winning the La Liga title – and this is exactly the kind of attitude the England team needs.

His emphasis of a strong defence and tight formation rather than free-flowing aesthetic football will hopefully bring an end to the woeful state of English football and get us back on track. I hope he can, we need it.
